What’s Included in an Employment or DOT Physical?
The scope of your physical exam depends on the job role and employer requirements. A standard employment physical may include:
- Medical history review
- Vital signs (blood pressure, pulse, etc.)
- Height, weight, vision, and hearing checks
- Musculoskeletal and cardiovascular evaluation
- Urinalysis (if required)
- Documentation or clearance forms
For DOT physicals, which are required for commercial driver’s license (CDL) holders, the exam includes:
- Full medical history review
- Vision and hearing tests
- Urinalysis for protein, glucose, and blood
- Physical exam covering neurological, cardiovascular, and musculoskeletal systems
- Completion of the FMCSA Medical Examiner’s Certificate (DOT Card)
DOT physicals are valid for up to 24 months, depending on medical findings.
