I’m so happy to have an urgent care close to home. Place is nice and clean. Dr. Luke is warm and kind. He took his time asked a lot of questions. I was really feeling very sick. Turns out I have covid AND strep throat. Thank you Dr. Luke and team!
Common Parasitic Conditions We Treat
Parasitic infections can range from mild to severe and may affect your gastrointestinal tract, skin, or overall immune health. We frequently diagnose and manage:
- Giardia
- Entamoeba histolytica
- Pinworms (Enterobiasis)
- Roundworms or hookworms
- Scabies and lice
- Toxoplasmosis (mild cases)
- Traveler’s diarrhea associated with parasites
- Skin-based parasites after exposure during travel or outdoor activity
If you’ve had recent international travel, exposure to contaminated food or water, or symptoms that don’t improve, don’t wait–visit our clinic for same-day care.
Initial Evaluation & Testing
A thorough evaluation is the first step toward relief. When you arrive, Dr. Luke will take a complete history and perform a focused physical exam. Your assessment may include:
- Review of symptoms such as abdominal pain, diarrhea, rash, or itching
- Travel history and recent exposures (e.g., lakes, pets, undercooked meat, international trips)
- Stool sample analysis for ova and parasites if GI symptoms are present
- Skin exam for signs of visible parasites, burrows, or inflammation
- Lab testing for eosinophilia or other infection markers (as needed)
This allows us to distinguish parasitic infections from bacterial or viral causes–and deliver appropriate, targeted care.

How We Treat Parasitic Infections
Treatment for parasitic infections is based on the specific organism involved, the severity of your symptoms, and whether the infection is localized (e.g., skin) or systemic (e.g., gastrointestinal or blood-borne). At Urgent Care Plus & Wellness, we provide evidence-based, targeted care for both acute and lingering cases.
Here’s how we typically manage treatment:
1. Antiparasitic Medications
Prescription antiparasitic drugs are the cornerstone of treatment. Depending on the infection, Dr. Luke may prescribe:
- Metronidazole or tinidazole for giardiasis or amoebiasis
- Albendazole or mebendazole for intestinal worms (e.g., pinworms, hookworms)
- Ivermectin for strongyloidiasis, scabies, or lice
- Pyrantel pamoate for pinworms (especially in pediatric cases)
These medications are usually well tolerated and work quickly to eliminate the infection.
2. Topical Treatments for Skin Parasites
Scabies and lice are treated with medicated creams or shampoos:
- Permethrin cream for scabies
- Lindane lotion or malathion for resistant lice
- Manual removal or repeat treatments may be needed for severe infestations
We also educate patients on cleaning bedding, clothing, and household items to prevent reinfestation.
3. Supportive Care for GI Symptoms
For patients experiencing diarrhea, cramping, or nausea, we often include:
- Oral or IV hydration therapy
- Electrolyte replacement
- Dietary guidance to promote gut healing (e.g., BRAT diet)
- Anti-nausea medications if vomiting is present
4. Follow-Up and Prevention Guidance
In cases where symptoms persist or reinfection is possible, we may recommend:
- Repeat stool testing
- Family screening (especially in pinworm cases)
- Detailed hygiene and food safety tips
- Referral to infectious disease for rare or resistant infections
Dr. Luke’s experience in both emergency and global medicine allows him to confidently manage a wide range of parasitic infections–even those acquired during international travel.
